The key is to keep eating…

The wood pigeons are a curious lot, in that they rarely seem to interact within the garden…that would entail stopping eating. This afternoon there were three occupying much of the grass. Other birds would come and go, the ring dove returned again and again and the reed bunting, abandoning its acrobatics of the day before, wove around their feet, but the pigeons rarely lifted their heads with their tiny black eyes.

I have still to take out Spikey’s meal, which is a type of little crunchy biscuit, bought from a specialist hedgehog supplier. Even when he was looking very lethargic, these were clearly popular. Unfortunately, if I put them out too early, they’re also very popular with the blackbirds and they have plenty of other sources of sustenance. Another scavenger today was the song thrush, which I saw digging through the earth around some bulbs. We’ve had the first rain in nearly a month and I’ve put the sprinkler on a couple of times, so that the earth is not so hard-baked…and it came to drink too.
