Heat…

It has been very hot today and a lot of birds have kept to the shade of the trees. I was putting out the seed this morning, adding a handful of dried mealworms to the coconut feeder when a thrush jumped down from the rosebed to rummage through the leaf litter at the base of the little wall. I was still and it ignored my presence. It was sleek to the point of skinny and I was surprised by how long its legs were.

The train of starlings came and went fairly quickly. They found the mealworms but there weren’t many left. The chaffinches, which sometimes get overlooked, had made a bee-line for the coconut almost as soon as I got to the top of the steps into the house and it was an anonymous female sparrow, frantically stuffing whatever she could find into the open mouths around her, who monopolised the handful of mealworms on the grass.
