Some of the fledglings haven’t yet learned to avoid human beings and this morning there were two young thrushes under the table just outside the sunroom. I was surprised at how slim they were. Whereas the starlings and sparrows have scrawny parents and are fat fluffy balls, these beautiful creatures were almost carbon copies of their parents.
I went to collect some seed and mealworms. I was putting a handful into the three-quarter coconut when the adult thrush hopped down from the rosebed to the earth border of the lawn and began to forage around for grubs. I was still and it continued with its search. It had collected a beakful and suddenly the fledglings appeared from the greenery around my feet and bounced towards their parent in the middle of the lawn. Magic.
