A change in the weather…

It’s gone cold again, with a couple of sharp hailshowers and driving rain. The garden was calmer today, with a ‘normal’ number of ring doves, the wood pigeon, a handful of sparrows and chaffinches and I saw one of the thrushes. It was simply sitting on the fence, so I took it to be a fledgling waiting for its food. Eventually, it flew off in search of its parent.

The wind had picked up by the time that the woodpecker arrived for her lunch. It was fascinating watching her feeding. She was on the far side of the wire cone, pecking at the nuts at the bottom of the feeder, but appeared to be able to change her position, hanging horizontally with her head to the left or the right, without actually having to change her footing on the wire. The robin and a starling were on the grass underneath, picking up the falling pieces.
