It is fascinating to see which ‘supplementary’ foods the birds take to with enthusiasm – or indeed are prepared to try at all. I’ve tried occasionally with fruit that has gone over – the blackbirds go demented if given an overripe pear, hurling the halves around in order to peel off the skin – but, despite having a rich smell, they will not touch galia melon. Actually, melons of any kind don’t seem popular, despite some of them being grown in the UK, although not outside.
I’ve left half of a melon outside tonight and it will be found by slugs and other bugs, so that there will be evidence of some munching tomorrow – and I suppose that they will provide the hedgehog with a varied food supply.
